Midwest Fasteners create strong connections with exceptional service, trusted relationships, and kept promises.

In the hardware industry, retailers and manufacturers often face similar challenges. Both are dealing with inflation related to the rising costs of raw materials and the uncertainty of tariffs. Yet everyone agrees the industry is resilient and remains steadfast in seeking solutions. When businesses are built on a solid foundation and an enduring legacy, the owners are excited about the future and dream of possibilities for the next generation.

Midwest Fasteners is a family-owned business started by Grandpa (Fred) DeVries. Always a good businessman, he did his homework and learned everything he could about the industry. He understood the types of fasteners retailers needed to stock to keep their customers coming back. Grandpa Fred’s hard work paid off. Fifty-eight years later, Midwest Fasteners operates based on Grandpa Fred’s principles and vision.

Please share an overview of the company’s history.

Founded in 1967, Midwest was born out of Grandpa (Fred) DeVries’ vision and dedication. He began his journey with two hardware stores and a dream to make service a top priority. When he moved to Michigan, he didn’t just bring his business acumen; he brought a passion for understanding the nuances of the hardware industry.

Through his close work with many different suppliers, he gained invaluable insights into the specific needs and challenges faced by retailers. He recognized the friction points within the hardware business and knew exactly how to address them effectively. His commitment to service and his strong relationships with suppliers and customers laid the foundation for what Midwest stands for today. His legacy of exceptional service and understanding the true needs of retailers continues to guide us in everything we do.

What are some of the biggest challenges manufacturers face today?
Today’s manufacturers are navigating inflation in every aspect of their business. That and the uncertainty surrounding tariffs make it challenging to plan long-term. In some regions of the country, the job market is as strong as ever, making hiring and retaining the best employees difficult.

Do the company’s core values and commitment to customer service shape the culture of the organization?

Midwest Fastener’s core values and unwavering commitment to customer service profoundly shape the culture of the organization. At the heart of Midwest Fastener lies a dedication to integrity, innovation, and excellence. These core values drive every aspect of the company’s operations, from product development to customer interactions. By prioritizing customer service, Midwest Fastener fosters a customer-centric culture where the needs and satisfaction of customers are paramount. This focus on providing exceptional service cultivates a sense of trust and loyalty among customers, leading to long-lasting relationships.

Midwest Fasteners offers retailers personalized solutions for their markets and store layouts. What is the first step in this process?

The first step is to get a Midwest sales representative into the store to get eyes on the current display and spend time with the retailer and their staff. Our local representatives are best suited to analyze a retailer’s current hardware offering and understand specific store goals and expectations. From there, the local representative will make suggestions for updates and upgrades.

How do packaging, planograms, and visual presentation drive product sales?

At Midwest Fastener, we know that developing the right packaging, planograms, and visual presentation is crucial for driving sales. Attractive packaging captures customer attention and conveys product quality, while effective planograms optimize product placement for maximum visibility and accessibility. Engaging visual presentations create an inviting shopping environment, enhancing brand recognition and customer loyalty. Focusing on these elements ensures customers can easily find what they need, leading to higher satisfaction and increased sales. –

Does the company offer DIY assortments and pro assortments? How should retailers adjust their sales approach to connect with the two audiences?

When it comes to hardware, we offer a comprehensive range of products, from rare, hard-to-find items to the most popular fasteners and supplies sought after by contractors. Retailers should carry a well-balanced mix of both to cater to their customer base’s diverse needs effectively. The product assortment can vary significantly based on factors such as the type of store, location, and target market. This is why we emphasize the importance of leveraging experience and data when working with customers. Our goal is to provide valuable insights and recommendations tailored to each retailer’s unique situation. By understanding their specific needs and preferences, we can help them create an optimized product mix that drives customer satisfaction and business success. –

Why are fasteners a good niche business for independent retailers?

Fasteners can be a destination department at an independent hardware store or home center. The typical big box outlet stocks only the top-selling items and does not offer a good selection of hard-to-find items to help a homeowner fix an item or complete a project. Midwest Fastener’s business started by offering unique items in small quantities in easy-to-shop assortment drawers. –

What is the most important thing retailers should know about Midwest Fasteners?

Our primary goal is to ensure the success of our customers, and we take pride in counting them as our partner destinations rather than just customers. We are dedicated to their long-term success, not merely focusing on one-time sales. Our mission is to help our partners succeed and flourish in their respective fields. When a retailer praises our representative by saying, “They take care of me,” it speaks volumes about the level of dedication and care we provide. We strive to build strong, lasting relationships with our partners, working hand in hand to achieve mutual growth and prosperity. Focusing on their success creates a win-win situation that benefits everyone involved. –
